When I go out to write in public, more often than not I have to use a notepad and pen. That's because I don't have a laptop. Except for the fact that handwriting is slower, I don't often find much difference between handwritting and typing. Other people swear that handwriting, solely by being the slower method, forces them to think more about what they're writing and results in a better draft.
What do you think? Do you prefer typing or handwritting?

It depends.
ReplyDeleteI leave deep piles of handscribbled notes everywhere and I often use a legal pad and a pen to get away from the lure of the Internet (or when my eyes start hurting from screen glare).
But more often, I transfer new material directly from brain to document file. I also have an e-mail draft folder full of typewritten "scribbles." Typewriten words seem jus that much closer to being Real Stories (TM). And I suppose they are.
That's interesting, because I often feel that my brand new ideas look so tiny written down in a big word document all by themselves. I tend to think they're much happier all crammed together in my notebook.
ReplyDeleteBut I can see your point. Nowadays if you sent a publisher a handwritten manuscript presumably they'd be ranting on their blog about people like you before they'd even looked past the front page. Typing things out makes them seem more official.
